Welcome to our very first edition of the Cowboy Country Gazette! We’ll be sending out short, useful articles – things that will be useful in your business and your personal life. We’re here to make your life easier!

This week’s article is about the dangers of using public free email accounts for your real estate business.  Cybercrime has unfortunately become a part of our every day lives.  Hackers strike every day – even in Erath County!

Hackers go after the weakest targets because they’re the easiest to hit.  Make sure you do everything you can to protect yourself and your clients by not being an easy target. Hackers can easily hack into your public email account (,,,, etc.) and send fake wiring instructions to your clients, lenders, title company, etc.  Educate your clients about the dangers of this as well.  Make sure they know to NEVER trust wiring instructions sent via email and to always confirm any wire instructions in person or via a trusted and verified phone number.

One easy step you can take to reduce your risk is to get rid of your public email account and change to a private provider.  If your company has a website, you should be able to get an email with the company’s domain name. For example, my email is [email protected].  If you don’t have access to email through your company, you can set up your own domain name and get an email account through the domain company.

Once you’ve set up your new private email account, make sure your new email password is different than your old email account.  Forward any important emails from your old account to your new one and then delete all emails in your old account – including the Sent folder.  Finally, set up an Auto Reply on your old account so that anyone who sends you an email will be notified of your new email address.  You can leave this old account set up this way as long as you like.

It may seem like a huge hassle to make this kind of change but it could keep you from becoming a victim of cyber crime. If you have any questions or would like more information about setting up a new email account, please let us know. We’re here to make your life easier and will help in any way we can!
